Well- got my FT-891, only to find it has issues. Got my FT-891 today and got it all hooked up and ready for the RTTY contest, only to find out that it has some sort of USB issue. Constant beeping from the internal speaker (external speaker plugged in also exhibits this) when connected via USB and software (N1MM/HRD) is communicating to it. Yaesu VR120 Programming Software VR-120 Commander - version 0.1 This version currently only works with the US model.
I researched this before I purchased my Signalink to pair up with my FT891.From reading all the forum posts and Youtube instructions I did the following:1. I got a Windows desktop computer with a good sized screen (even tho I'm a Mac User I decided Windows was a better platform for a ham)2. Got the Signalink USB and followed instructions that came with it ( they are for a Windows machine)3. Downloaded FLDIGI and followed instructionsIt worked well. While operating I experienced some specific glitches but monitoring the FLDIGI user group solved those quickly. The problem with googling instructions for doing digital modes is that you will receive some conflicting responses.
That is a problem with googling anything. User groups can be more illuminating.Another 'problem' with digital is that things are continually changing. I can't believe the number of updates being made and beta testing going on. But that's a reality of attempting the cutting edge of technology. It's a challenge to the CW and SSB ham operator's.
But remember that CW and SSB were a challenge at one time also!Good luck on digital! Thanks for the replies!
Googling is not always successful. Especially having the FT-891 and a MAC.I do have everything working correctly now on WSJT-X and I will look at fldigi some other time. With WSJT-X I first had a problem with the program crashing constantly. I could monitor and transmit but when that DX station came back the program would go bye bye. I had to downgrade to a previous version. John G4KLA answered my email saying that they are working on that problem.I also did not have the signal link completely hooked up. On all the articles/videos about the FT-891 they have CAT control.
One cable from the transceiver to signal-link. One from signal-link to computer. And CAT from transceiver to computer. (How I think I see it at least!). I did the same think but with no USB CAT cable. Then I was not decoding using the codec which did not make sense but I’m not a computer person.
It worked.until a noise was made in the room. I realize the audio was getting to the computer by air rather than cable.I needed the audio cable from transceiver to signal-link.Probably more information than necessary.but perhaps it will help someone else out. There are two reason why I have the current setup.#1 Propagation is poor in northern Alaska. I needed a week signal mode that doesn’t get destroyed by Aurora.#2 I am not settled into one radio shack. And I also like being able to take my equipment with me. The smaller the amount and size radio station I carry on the airplane the better! So the MacBook Air is quite nice for my circumstances.Thank you,HenryNL0H.
